Perhaps one of the most valuable currencies in today’s world is that of attention.
Today we’re going to discuss creative ways you can spend (or give your attention) , and the people and/or things you should be giving it to.
Since we at A Step Above Style value your time (and because you already know why you’re here) we’ll jump right in.
Let’s begin.
How Attention Affects People In Different Ways
If you are “rich” when it comes to having other people’s attention you could be considered famous.
What makes celebrities famous for example is the amount of people paying attention to them at any given moment.
On the other hand if you’re “poor” in regards to other people’s attention you may feel neglected, and without purpose.
Consider the man on the street asking for help. Many walk or drive by and ignore him , thereby making his bad situation even worse.
How To Decide Who Gets Your Attention
For this section and the one to follow, prioritization is key. When it comes to who gets your attention you must choose who is most important.
Here’s a few things to consider when picking who gets your attention:
- Are you in a romantic relationship?
- Do you have children?
- Are you currently at home or at work?
- Are you actively trying to learn something?
Now let’s break this down a bit.
If you’re in a romantic relationship and off from work, the person who should get your attention is most likely your significant other.
If you’re anywhere with your children, that’s who should get your attention. Failure to give them your attention could allow that young child to walk out into a busy street for example.
If you’re at work , give your attention to those responsibilities you’ve been given by your supervisor or manager. Don’t fall into the trap of doing other things for other departments on your job. Give your undivided attention to what is expected of you at work.
Lastly if you’re in a class, you should focus on the teacher. You signed up for that class for a reason right? You may as well pay attention just as you paid for that class! To pay for a class and allow yourself to get distracted in it is a waste of money.
Simple enough, right?
How To Decide What Gets Your Attention
Now let’s discuss what (thing or task) should be the recipient of your attention.
To make things easy here are a few things to consider when deciding what gets your attention :
- Do you have a favorite hobby or passion project?
- Is there a activity you enjoy doing that always leaves you feeling satisfied and glad you did it?
- Is there something that helps advance you toward reaching personal goals such as learning a new language, strengthening a relationship, or growing your business?
The way we at A Step Above Style look at things is this :
After you’ve worked all day at work, it would be foolish to come home and simply go to sleep.
Why? Because now that you’ve given time to your employer, it’s now time to focus on you!
What makes you happy? What makes you feel satisfied and content? What are your favorite things to do?
Give your attention to those things as opposed to scrolling social media, lazing around, or doing mediocre activities.
Conclusion
We at A Step Above Style hope today’s post has been helpful to you.
Attention is a valuable “currency” and should be spent wisely.
