One way to reduce stress and anxiety is by decluttering your space. Whether it’s your bedroom, closet, garage, or office, all areas can use a declutter every now and again.
In today’s post we at A Step Above Style will be sharing a simple 4-step guide on how to declutter. This is the approach we use, and we believe it will be of great benefit to you as well.
Let’s begin.

1. Start Small

Think of decluttering as a marathon, and not a short distance sprint. There’s no prize to be won for decluttering your entire home in 60 minutes or less.
We believe you should approach this project with the snowball method. Start small, build up momentum, and accomplish greater things with each attempt.
2. The 3 Box Method

- Keep – these items bring joy, serve a purpose, or are extremely sentimental to you
- Donate – items that you can part with, but should be given away as the item still has a lot of life left in it
- Toss – items that no longer serve a purpose to you, nor would they be good to anyone else
3. Resist The Urge To Go Down Memory Lane

For your first round of decluttering we recommend the following :
Don’t look through photo albums, yearbooks, or memory boxes of old letters and post cards.
The reason we say this is it will only slow you down and make you second guess the value of decluttering. (i.e. decluttering only makes me get rid of memories)
At the point you get familiar with this process you can revisit those sentimental items. But for now, we recommend just focusing on something else.
4. Make Those Tough Choices

Once you have declutterd easier areas such as the :
- Nightstand
- Cereal cabinet
- Kids toy chest
- Etc.
Then you can move on to bigger projects like :
- Your closet
- The garage
- The living room
- The kitchen
- Kid’s room
Pro Tip – The Steps To Decluttering Success

Ask yourself the following questions as you go through the steps.
P.S. These steps are especially helpful for sentimental items.
Always keep in mind you never have to get rid of anything that truly matters to you.
Step #1 – Does the item bring joy or serve a useful purpose?
Yes = Keep. No = See Step #2
Step #2 – Would a photo of the item be sufficient for memories sake?
Yes = Photo + Get Rid of Item No = Get Rid of Item
Conclusion

We hope this post encourages you to give Minimalism, and more specifically the practice of decluttering, a try.
The goal is to only have items you love, bring you joy, and serve a purpose. It’s not about numbers, it’s about fulfillment.
Until next time, y’all have a good one.
