Recently I was able to pick up a very special watch for a great price.
When it comes to minimal watches showcasing Bauhaus designs, Nomos sits at the top in my opinion.
Some people actually buy watches from Sternglas, and Junghans to replicate the look of a Nomos watch. While these other two watch makers are great in their own right, Nomos watches are just special.
Today I’m super excited to share with you the watch I recently acquired.
Let’s begin.
History
Nomos was founded in Glashütte, Germany by Roland Schwertner in 1990.
One interesting fact about the founding of Nomos is that it came to be only 2 months after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The Berlin Wall was a barrier that divided Germany from 1961 to 1989. It completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin until government officials opened it in November 1989.
In 2005 the company went fully in-house and has remained independent ever since. Because of this, Nomos is able to conduct business and build watches in its own way.
This is in contrast to the Swatch Group that owns many well known companies as pictured below.
Nomos watches emphasize Bauhaus design principles.
Bauhaus is German term for “building house”. There was a German art school operational from 1919 to 1933 and taught these principles.
Apple is one company famous for its use of Bauhaus design principles.

What Makes This Watch Special To Me
This watch is special to me for at least two reasons.
First because I bought it after receiving a promotion at work. What’s significant about this promotion is that it’s actually the first ever promotion I’ve received since I started working in 2012.
I’ve experienced much success in my career over the years, but this is my first proper promotion. So I wanted to remember this special moment in time with a timepiece.
Secondly because this watch is very minimal. After reading this blog post you now know many of the things that make this watch special. But to the untrained eye, it’s just an average looking watch. To me it’s minimal, sophisticated, and productive. All qualities that I try to embody also.
It looks great in classy and casual settings, and I wear it as often as possible.
Conclusion
I hope you found this post as interesting as I did while writing it.
Buying watches to remember special moments in time is something I enjoy much better than just casually shopping for them.
Purchasing watches this way helps me remain frugal, minimalist, and intentional.
