Building your ideal wardrobe can be a daunting task for both men and women.
There is so much to consider such as different outfits for different occasions, clothes for changing seasons, and various colors that must be paired one with another.
So while task may seem insurmountable, we have one key bit of advice that is sure to help you achieve your dream closet.
It’s a piece of advice you can apply immediately and achieve better results in every outfit you put together.
Since we at A Step Above Style value your time (and because you already know why you’re here) we’ll jump right in.
Let’s begin.

Style Vs. Fashion

We at A Step Above Style believe that it’s important to not just build a wardrobe, but to build one that can stand the test of time.
It’s no secret that clothing can change drastically from one decade to another. What is “cool” or socially acceptable can vary widely from one moment to the next.
Proof of this can be seen from the graphic below displaying the changes in style from one decade to another.

While the above graphic can make it seem “impossible” to buy clothes that can stand the test of time (pertaining to style and not the durability of the fabrics themselves) there are actually key things that help you achieve a timeless look.
For example in each decade from the 1920’s – the 2000’s a good pair of dress shoes would have always been appropriate no matter what was currently the fashion.
Someone who bought a pair of dark brown oxfords would always have something to wear to a nicer occasion such as a job interview, wedding, or a formal event.
To prove our point let’s look at the example of two men who chose to buy very different pairs of shoes.
Peter and John’s Shoes

Peter (a reader of A Step Above Style) knows that every dollar he spends should go to a worthwhile cause. He lives by the ASAS principle of:
“It’s better to have money than look like you have money. So never break your budget to go shopping”.
ASAS Words Of Wisdom
So Peter decides to “buy once and cry once” by saving up his money and buying a high quality pair of shoes as opposed to buying cheap fashionable shoes that go in and out of public favor.
Instead he does plenty of research, and decides on the pair found below.

John is Peter’s friend, and spends a lot of time each day on Instagram. He loves scrolling through his feed and seeing the latest and greatest in men’s fashion.
While John enjoys having money, he doesn’t mind living paycheck to paycheck and doing what seems best in the moment. The YOLO acronym describes John’s mentality perfectly.
One day John sees an add pop up for a dazzling pair of shoes that he just has to have. Nobody else in his friend circle has ever seen a pair like these before. John clicks “add to cart” and the below pair is what he purchases:

With our very simple example, you can correctly assume that Peter bought the pair of shoes that will stand the test of time.
While John’s shoes will turn heads, they will not probably not grant him the type of attention he was originally after.
Unfortunately John chose fashion as opposed to Peter’s choice which was style.
The Key To Building a Timeless Wardrobe

The key to building a timeless wardrobe is to choose style over fashion.
ASAS Words of Wisdom
By choosing clothing that has been socially acceptable for years, we allow ourselves to build something that will always work regardless of the decade we find ourselves in.
Below are several more examples of what will always work in a man’s wardrobe
- A navy or charcoal suit
- Dark-colored over the calf dress socks
- A dress watch with a simple dial and leather band
- A solid or striped tie
- A white shirt with collars that extend under your suit jacket’s lapel
- White sneakers
- Dark denim jeans
- A dark brown or black leather jacket
- Etc.
Any of the above items would’ve looked great from the 1920’s until present day. It’s because they are versatile, timeless, and proven to work.
None of them are new, a trend, or a passing fad.
