In our Blog Bites series we like to take a bite-sized look at a concept or idea, and leave our readers with some food for thought.
Today we will be examining how a good reputation and a heavy winter coat are similar.
For our example, we want you to visualize your reputation like a heavy winter coat.
When you think of a coat such as this, you think about all of the benefits it offers you. It’s soft, comfortable, and protective in its design.
But what we don’t often think about is the price of such coats. Those same benefits we mentioned above cause these coats to be priced muc higher than light-weight varieties.
Additionally, once we put on a heavy winter coat we become very limited in our movements. As the level of protection from the elements increases, the amount of body movement decreases.
These large coats cause us to hardly be able to lift our arms or bend over and pick something up.
These coats can be so large in fact, that some would prefer something a bit lighter and choose to just deal with the consequences.
What if I told you a good reputation shares many of these same characteristics?
A good reputation offers many benefits to whom it belongs.
It defends it’s owner from baseless rumors, can attract new business opportunities, and can even lead to a new relationship.
We cannot forget the other aspects of our illustration however.
A good reputation can only be maintained when the owner limits themself in what they say and do. The price they pay for all the benefits is not saying or doing everything that comes to their mind.
Some choose not to bear the weight of a good reputation and instead decide to face the consequences of doing things their way.
Rather than being limited in speech or action, they do whatever seems appropriate in their eyes. After all, what’s wrong with being a bit edgy?
In conclusion, we understand not all are willing to wear the heavy coat. Some would rather be a free spirit and do what they desire.
Others would rather live a life of discipline and order.
Want to know what kind of reputation you have? It’s easy to find out. Just look at the price you have (or haven’t been) paying lately.
Until next time, yall have a good one.
