But before we begin, did you know?
A Step Above Style is more than just a blog. It’s a community.
A community of ladies and gentlemen who strive toward the common goal of being the best version of themselves possible.
Below is a truly fascinating interview we had with one of our valued members, Asiah Featherstone.
Introduction
ASAS Blog: Hey! Thanks for joining us today. Please formally introduce yourself to the Community.
Asiah : Hey everyone! My name is Asiah Featherstone.
ASAS Blog : Awesome, I think we’re off to a great start already. And how old are you Asiah?
Asiah : I’m 27 years old.
ASAS Blog: Where is your hometown?
Asiah : Houston, TX
ASAS Blog : What is a funny story your family tells about you that you’d like to share?
Asiah : A funny store my family tells about me takes place when I was about 4 years old. It was picture day at my daycare, and on the way there I let my mom know that I would not be smiling for the pictures.
My mom took what I said with a grain of salt, however when it was my turn to get my picture taken… my lips wouldn’t budge! My mom begged and pleaded for me to smile, the photographers had the clowns there working over time to get me to smile, the staff was doing everything they could to get me to smile!
My mom also mentioned to me that all the kids around me were full of laughter due to the clown! Eventually my mom realized that I was not going to change my mind and had them just go ahead and take the picture!! We still have the picture and it makes us laugh every time we see it!
ASAS Blog : What are some of your hobbies/ interests?
Asiah : A few of my hobbies include making coffee, cooking, hosting, and photographing pretty moments. Something that interests me is human psychology. I am intrigued with the human make up, and learning about why we think, act, and live the way we do.
Work
ASAS Blog : What is your occupation?
Asiah : I’m a professional photographer.
ASAS Blog : What is a secret about the industry you work in that most people don’t know?
Asiah : A secret about photography that I think most people don’t know is how long post-production can actually take! People see you go to a photo shoot and take pictures and often don’t give thought to what happens after that.
To give a short example, after a photo shoot I take the pictures from my camera and upload them to my computer, after that I still have to go through all the pictures, pick the best ones, edit the pictures, send an invoice to the client, create a client gallery, then email.
While that may not sound like a lot, it is and can take hours/days!! The work only gets harder after you leave a shoot! However, I wouldn’t trade it for anything !!! I love what I do!
ASAS Blog : What is one lesson you’ve learned on your job that you think everyone should know about?
Asiah: One thing I’ve learned as a photographer is how powerful our mind is! Often times I have clients who are shy and timid in front of the camera.
After encouraging them, and getting them to see themselves the way I see them…. 9/10 they start to believe it and I see their confidence grow during the shoot!
The lesson in that is if you can think it, you can be it! I know that may sound cliche, but it’s so incredibly true! Whatever you want to do, if you put your mind to it… you CAN & WILL do it.
ASAS Blog : And why do you feel like that lesson is important for people to learn?
Asiah : I feel like people put limits on themselves! & what we think about, we eventually believe! I hear people say things like, “ I can’t open this business because ”, “I’ll never be able to do ” “Little Susie only has __ because she is just lucky”.
With the help of God and choosing to have a positive mindset, you can do anything you want to do! I am not saying it will be easy, but with consistency, a positive mindset and hard work… you CAN do what you put your mind too.
I honestly am very passionate about this topic and could talk about it all day!
ASAS Blog : If you could start a business tomorrow, what would it be?
Asiah : It would be a photography business, which I already have 🙂 I absolutely love what I do!!!
Life
ASAS Blog : Are you a introvert or a extrovert?
Asiah : Major Introvert!
ASAS Blog : If you could be remembered for one thing, what would it be?
Asiah : If I could be remembered for one thing, I would want it to be that I made others feel special, loved, and important.
ASAS Blog : If you could give your 18-year- old self advice, what would it be?
Asiah : I would give my 18 year old self the advice to DREAM BIG and worry about what God thinks of me rather than others.
ASAS Blog : Tell me about a influential person in your life and how they impacted you.
Asiah : Before sharing my influential person, I just say I am incredibly blessed to be around so many influential people who have impacted me in so many ways!!
A lady from my church, Sis. Yvette Gardner, is an influential women in my life. She is bold, sincere, Godly, kind, faithful, a friend, compassionate, thoughtful and so much more. She has impacted my life by being my friend through all that life throws at you!
The good, the bad, the ugly. She has impacted my life just by being who she is. I have learned so much from her, just by watching her. I have watched as she has treated others with so much kindness, I have watched the way she has made a house a home, I have watched how she is bold in her worship, and I have watched how she treats her family.
I have watched how she praises God for everything, I have watched how she is an supportive & godly wife, and I have watched how she is so faithful to church and always 100% on board with our pastor and to the will of God. She is truly incredible and has impacted my life.
